The truth about how to succeed on low carb diets in 2012.
Low carb diets generally get bad wrap in the dieting world. Many “experts” downplay the value of these diets. The truth be known, low carb diets are on of the best ways to start a weight loss program but should not a long term weight management plan.
There are two main reasons to start your long term weight management plan with a low carb diet for about 2-3 weeks before starting the The Diet Solution Program!
Low carb diets are know for giving you large initial weight loss numbers due to the fact that as you burn the stored glycogen in your muscles,you get rid of the water that is attached to it. This gives you a temporary weight loss. Why is temporary good? It provides motivation. You need to see the scale start moving at the very beginning of your dieting or you will not last long. Typically the first 2 weeks of a low carb diet are very restrictive and it is not uncommon to loss 8 -14 pounds in the first 2 weeks. If you were to quit a that point and start be on a normal diet, you should expect to gain 2-3 pounds back within a few days from your body re-hydrating. Notice that I did not say the whole 8-14 pounds! We will get back to this, but first I want to go over the other important reason to use a low carb diet for 2 weeks.
The second reason is to readjust how your body handles carb and insulin. Not trying to get to scientific, but when you eat carbs, your body uses insulin to control your blood sugar. Over time, if you are constantly consuming lots of carbs, your body doesn’t handle the process very well. It requires more and more insulin to do the job. Many times it really can’t do the job well anymore. This is the reason that there are many people with type 2 diabetes.
The good news is that there are studies that have found that by going on a low carb diet, that your body can reset this process and this leads to a chain reaction on how the body stores fat, processes food, etc. The end result is that this will help you succeed in a “normal” lifetime weight management plan.
So where does this put us. We start a low carb diet plan for two weeks. We dropped some serious weight and feel that we can succeed at our weight loss goal. Internally, we have sort of reset our system , which will make it easier to continue to loss weight. Now what?
Now we have to be ready to switch to a weight loss system / plan that works. We can’t think that we will just keep doing the low carb thing. It just is too hard, too unhealthy and to boring to do forever. We also need to steer clear of other “crash diets”. They never work out over the long term.
